Aging Out of Foster Care Essay - 1272 Words

For many teenagers, their 18th birthday is an exciting time in their lives. They are finally becoming a legal adult, and are free from the rules and restrictions created under their parents. But not all teens feel the same joy about this coming of age. For the hundreds of thousands of children living in foster care in the United States, this new found freedom brings anxiety and fear. Where will they live after turning 18? How will they get the medications they may need? How will they find a job with little to no experience? How will they put themselves through school? Aging out of foster care is a serious issue among America’s youth. Every year, 20,000 children will age out with nowhere to go, being expected to be able to survive on their†¦show more content†¦This percentage is doubled that of 18 year olds who had grown up outside of foster care (Jaudes 1171). No two children in foster care have the same background. The youths can vary by the age when placed into care, the number of times they were put into care, the quality of the home and family they lived with, and the youths own emotional outlooks (Zlotnick 539). They can develop abandonment issues due to being separated from their biological parents, and stunted emotional growth due to the trauma that foster care puts on a young child. Children need to be raised in a stable and safe environment, and while plenty of foster care parents are loving and nurturing to the child, they may still be affected by being raised by multiple families in a negative way. Every year, over 1 million children experience maltreatment, and about half of these children enter foster care (Greeson et al. 92). Those who enter foster care have usually encountered multiple traumatic events, from either their parents or another caregiver in their lives. There are different types of trauma child welfare programs focus on. They typically focus on behavioral and emotional problems and ways to correct the child (Greeson et al. 94). However, it is not as simple as the welfare programs want it to be. One first must look at the trauma history of the child, or the â€Å"Trauma History Profile†, also known as THP (Greeson et al. 97). The THP addresses â€Å"lifetime exposure to trauma and contains aShow MoreRelatedAging Out of the Foster Care System1281 Words   |  5 PagesDepartment of Health and Human Services, every year close to 25,000 youth age out of the foster care system and are faced with cold hard realities of adulthood. checking out me history and island man comparison - 807 Words

Checking out me history and island man comparison. â€Å"Checking out me history† is all about the writer wanting to learn about his past. Instead, he is being taught all about the history of white people. He keeps reciting facts that he has learnt. Some of the facts most English children would have learnt whilst they are in school, and some of the facts he has been taught outside of school, probably by his parents. The poem seems like it is a rant to the schooling system and the politics of the country. This may be why there is no punctuation in this poem. It is a way to rebel against the teachers. At school the teachers are always telling you to check your spelling and punctuation, and he is disagreeing with the way and things he is†¦show more content†¦This, along with a large amount of enjambment makes the poem flow easily. It seems like it is a few longs lines, rather than five stanzas! When you read the poem aloud the sound makes you think of waves in the sea, going back and forth. In the first stanza, there is a lot of sibilance – repeating of the sound â€Å"s†. This sounds a lot like the waves. In the first stanza, the fourth line is slightly different to the other lines. It tells you he is not in real life, because it is in his head, which suggests he is dreaming. In the second and third lines, there is enjambment, but this is where it stops. It confuses the reader, because without the fourth line, he is actually on his island, but when you read the fourth line you realise he is dreaming. The confusion reminds me of waking up in the morning, when you think you are still dreaming but then you realise you are not dreaming. At the end of the first stanza, the poet says â€Å"the steady breaking and wombing†. Steady breaking reminds you of the waves breaking on the beach on a nice clear morning, which implies it is a good memory. The word â€Å"wombing† is very rarely used in everyday life. It means to be doing nothing, being oblivious to the outside world. In addition, it implies protection and comfort. Before a baby is born, it lives in the mother’s womb, where the mother protects it and comforts. The womb is the baby’s home, although only for a short while. His face was so worried, I wondered if this would even work. I hardly needed the romance, but maybe he did. He closed his eyes as he leaned toward me, an automatic thing. His lips pressed lightly against mine once, and then he pulled back to look at me with the same worried expression. Nothing. â€Å"No, Ian. Really kiss me. Like†¦ like you’re trying to get slapped. Do you understand?† â€Å"No. What’s wrong? Tell me first.† I put my arms around his neck. It felt strange; I wasn’t at all sure how to do this right. I pushed up on my toes and pulled his head down at the same time until I could reach his lips with mine. This wouldn’t have worked with another species. Another mind wouldn’t have been so easily overwhelmed by its body. Other species had their priorities in better order. But Ian was human, and his body responded. I shoved my mouth against his, gripping his neck tighter with my arms when his first reaction was to hold me away. Remembering how his mouth had moved with mine before, I tried to mimic that movement now. His lips opened with mine, and I felt an odd thrill of triumph at my success. I caught his lower lip between my teeth and heard a low, wild sound break from his throat in surprise. And then I didn’t have to try anymore. One of Ian’s hands trapped my face, while the other clamped around the small of my back, holding me so close that it was hard to pull a breath into my constricted chest. I was gasping, but so was he. His breath mingled with mine. I felt the stone wall touch my back, press against it. He used it to bind me even closer. There was no part of me that wasn’t fused to part of him. It was just the two of us, so close that we hardly counted as two. Just us. No one else. Alone. Ian felt it when I gave up. He must have been waiting for this-not as entirely ruled by his body as I’d imagined. He eased back as soon as my arms went limp, but kept his face next to mine, the tip of his nose touching the tip of mine. I dropped my arms, and he took a deep breath. Slowly, he loosened both his hands and then placed them lightly on my shoulders. â€Å"Explain,† he said. â€Å"She’s not here,† I whispered, still breathing in gasps. â€Å"I can’t find her. And I haven’t heard her since. I can’t find her!† â€Å"Shh,† he said again. â€Å"Calmly. Okay. Now, what do you really want? I know you don’t want to upset Jamie, but he’s going to be fine regardless. So, consider-would it be better, just for you, if -â€Å" â€Å"No! I can’t erase Melanie! I can’t. That would be wrong! That would make me a monster, too!† â€Å"Okay, okay! Okay. Shh. So we have to find her?† I nodded urgently. He took another deep breath. â€Å"Then you need to†¦ really be overwhelmed, don’t you?† â€Å"I don’t know what you mean.† I was afraid I did, though. Kissing Ian was one thing-even a pleasant thing, maybe, if I wasn’t so racked with worry-but anything more†¦ elaborate†¦ Could I? Mel would be furious if I used her body that way. Was that what I had to do to find her? But what about Ian? It was so grossly unfair to him. â€Å"I’ll be right back,† Ian promised. â€Å"Stay here.† He pressed me against the wall for emphasis and then ducked back out into the hallway. It was hard to obey. I wanted to follow him, to see what he was doing and where he was going. We had to talk about this; I had to think it through. But I had no time. Jamie was waiting for me, with questions that I couldn’t answer with lies. No, he wasn’t waiting for me; he was waiting for Melanie. How could I have done this? What if she was really gone? Mel, Mel, Mel, come back! Melanie, Jamie needs you. Not me-he needs you. He’s sick, Mel. Mel, can you hear that? Jamie is sick! I was talking to myself. No one heard. My hands were trembling with fear and stress. I wouldn’t be able to wait here much longer. I felt like the anxiety was going to make me swell until I popped. Finally, I heard footsteps. And voices. Ian wasn’t alone. Confusion swept through me. â€Å"Just think of it as†¦ an experiment,† Ian was saying. â€Å"Are you crazy?† Jared answered. â€Å"Is this some sick joke?† My stomach dropped through the floor. Overwhelmed. That’s what he’d meant. Blood burned in my face, hot as Jamie’s fever. What was Ian doing to me? I wanted to run, to hide somewhere better than my last hiding place, somewhere I could never, ever be found, no matter how many flashlights they used. But my legs were shaking, and I couldn’t move. Ian and Jared came into view in the room where the tunnels met. Ian’s face was expressionless; he had one hand on Jared’s shoulder and was guiding him, almost pushing him forward. You read "The Host Chapter 42: Forced" in category "Essay examples" Jared was staring at Ian with anger and doubt. â€Å"Through here,† Ian encouraged, forcing Jared toward me. I flattened my back against the rock. Jared saw me, saw my mortified expression, and stopped. â€Å"Wanda, what’s this about?† I threw Ian one blazing glance of reproach and then tried to meet Jared’s eyes. I couldn’t do it. I looked at his feet instead. â€Å"I lost Melanie,† I whispered. â€Å"You lost her!† I nodded miserably. His voice was hard and angry. â€Å"How?† â€Å"I’m not sure. I made her be quiet†¦ but she always comes back†¦ always before†¦ I can’t hear her now†¦ and Jamie†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"She’s gone?† Muted agony in his voice. â€Å"I don’t know. I can’t find her.† Deep breath. â€Å"Why does Ian think I have to kiss you?† â€Å"Not kiss me,† I said, my voice so faint I could barely hear it myself. â€Å"Kiss her. Nothing upset her more than when you kissed us†¦ before. Nothing pulled her to the surface like that. Maybe†¦ No. You don’t have to. I’ll try to find her myself.† I still had my eyes on his feet, so I saw him step toward me. â€Å"You think, if I kiss her†¦?† I couldn’t even nod. I tried to swallow. Familiar hands brushed my neck, tracing down either side to my shoulders. My heart thudded loud enough that I wondered if he could hear it. I was so embarrassed, forcing him to touch me this way. What if he thought it was a trick-my idea, not Ian’s? I wondered if Ian was still there, watching. How much would this hurt him? One hand continued, as I knew it would, down my arm to my wrist, leaving a trail of fire behind it. The other cupped beneath my jaw, as I knew it must, and pulled my face up. His cheek pressed against mine, the skin burning where we were connected, and he whispered in my ear. â€Å"Melanie. I know you’re there. Come back to me.† His cheek slowly slid back, and his chin tilted to the side so that his mouth covered mine. He tried to kiss me softly. I could tell that he tried. But his intentions went up in smoke, just like before. There was fire everywhere, because he was everywhere. His hands traced my skin, burning it. His lips tasted every inch of my face. The rock wall slammed into my back, but there was no pain. I couldn’t feel anything besides the burning. My hands knotted in his hair, pulling him to me as if there were any possible way for us to be closer. My legs wrapped around his waist, the wall giving me the leverage I needed. His tongue twisted with mine, and there was no part of my mind that was not invaded by the insane desire that possessed me. He pulled his mouth free and pressed his lips to my ear again. â€Å"Melanie Stryder!† It was so loud in my ear, a growl that was almost a shout. â€Å"You will not leave me. Don’t you love me? Prove it! Prove it! Damn it, Mel! Get back here!† His lips attacked mine again. Ahhh, she groaned weakly in my head. I couldn’t think to greet her. I was on fire. The fire burned its way to her, back to the tiny corner where she drooped, nearly lifeless. My hands fisted around the fabric of Jared’s T-shirt, yanking it up. This was their idea; I didn’t tell them what to do. His hands burned on the skin of my back. Jared? she whispered. She tried to orient herself, but the mind we shared was so disoriented. I felt the muscles of his stomach under my palms, my hands crushed between us. What? Where†¦ Melanie struggled. I broke away from his mouth to breathe, and his lips scorched their way down my throat. I buried my face in his hair, inhaling the scent. Jared! Jared! NO! I let her flow through my arms, knowing this was what I wanted, though I could barely pay attention now. The hands on his stomach turned hard, angry. The fingers clawed at his skin and then shoved him as hard as they could. â€Å"NO!† she shouted through my lips. Jared caught her hands, then caught me against the wall before I could fall. I sagged, my body confused by the conflicting directions it was receiving. â€Å"Mel? Mel!† â€Å"What are you doing?† He groaned in relief. â€Å"I knew you could do it! Ah, Mel!† He kissed her again, kissed the lips that she now controlled, and we could both taste the tears that ran down his face. She bit him. Jared jumped back from us, and I slid to the floor, landing in a wilted heap. He started laughing. â€Å"That’s my girl. You still got her, Wanda?† â€Å"Yes,† I gasped. What the hell, Wanda? she screeched at me. Where have you been? Do you have any idea what I’ve been going through trying to find you? Yeah, I can see that you were really suffering. Oh, I’ll suffer, I promised her. I could already feel it coming on. Just like before†¦ She was flipping through my thoughts as fast as she could. Jamie? That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you. He needs you. Then why aren’t we with him? Because he’s probably a bit young to watch this kind of thing. She searched through some more. Wow, Ian, too. I’m glad I missed that part. I was so worried. I didn’t know what to do†¦ Well, c’mon. Let’s go. â€Å"Mel?† Jared asked. â€Å"She’s here. She’s furious. She wants to see Jamie.† Jared put his arm around me and helped me up. â€Å"You can be as mad as you want, Mel. Just stick around.† How long was I gone? Three days is all. Her voice was suddenly smaller. Where was I? You don’t know? I can’t remember†¦ anything. We shuddered. â€Å"You okay?† Jared asked. â€Å"Sort of.† â€Å"Was that her before, talking to me-talking out loud?† â€Å"Yes.† â€Å"Can she†¦ can you let her do that now?† I sighed. I was already exhausted. â€Å"I can try.† I closed my eyes. Can you get past me? I asked her. Can you talk to him? I†¦ How? Where? I tried to flatten myself against the inside of my head. â€Å"C’mon,† I murmured. â€Å"Here.† Melanie struggled, but there was no way out. Jared’s lips came down on mine, hard. My eyes flew open in shock. His gold-flecked eyes were open, too, half an inch away. She jerked our head back. â€Å"Cut that out! Don’t touch her!† He smiled, the little creases feathering out around his eyes. â€Å"Hey, baby.† That’s not funny. I tried to breathe again. â€Å"She’s not laughing.† He left his arm around me. Around us. We walked out into the tunnel junction, and there was no one there. No Ian. â€Å"I’m warning you, Mel,† Jared said, still smiling widely. Teasing. â€Å"You better stay right here. I’m not making any guarantees about what I will or won’t do to get you back.† My stomach fluttered. Tell him I’ll throttle him if he touches you like that again. But her threat was a joke, too. â€Å"She’s threatening your life right now,† I told him. â€Å"But I think she’s being facetious.† He laughed, giddy with relief. â€Å"You’re so serious all the time, Wanda.† â€Å"Your jokes aren’t funny,† I muttered. Not to me. Jared laughed again. Ah, Melanie said. You are suffering. I’ll try not to let Jamie see. Thank you for bringing me back. I won’t erase you, Melanie. I’m sorry I can’t give you more than that. Thank you. â€Å"What’s she saying?† â€Å"We’re just†¦ making up.† â€Å"Why couldn’t she talk before, when you were trying to let her?† â€Å"I don’t know, Jared. There really isn’t enough room for both of us. I can’t seem to get myself out of the way completely. It’s like†¦ not like holding your breath. Like trying to pause your heartbeats. I can’t make myself not exist. I don’t know how.† He didn’t answer, and my chest throbbed with pain. How joyful he would be if I could figure out how to erase myself! Melanie wanted to†¦ not to contradict me, but to make me feel better; she struggled to find words to soften my agony. She couldn’t come up with the right ones. But Ian would be devastated. And Jamie. Jeb would miss you. You have so many friends here. Thanks. I was glad that we were back to our room now. I needed to think about something else before I started crying. Now wasn’t the time for self-pity. There were more important issues at hand than my heart, breaking yet again. How to cite The Host Chapter 42: Forced, Essay examples

Question: Discuss About The National Committee Inquiry Higher Education? Answer: Introducation The purpose of this report is to plan a course of action to achieve my long term goal of becoming a qualified and employable professional. In this report I will first list the strengths and skills I possess currently. I will then break my goal into small medium and long term goals. I will then list the skill gaps and weaknesses I have which might obstruct my action plan of achieving my goals. Finally, I will list the course of action needed to be taken in order to accomplish set goals. What is Personal Development Plan? In order to excel in modern working environment, approaching learning in a structured way is important if one wants to make most of his/ her time. A Personal Development Plan is a tool to map self-development, career and academic progression. Building a development plan requires an individual to reflect on his/her past achievements and contemplate on strength, weakness and opportunities he/she might have (Dearing, 1997). Organizations employ personal development plan to develop action plan for an individual and its success is his/her primary responsibility. What are my current strengths and skill sets? Critical analysis and judgment: Ability to collect and analyze information and make decision based on it is a skill I have acquired during this course. While attending classes and seminars we were encouraged to share our own opinions and develop arguments. Critical thinking is one of the most sought after qualities by employers (Browne Keeley, 2001). Good at research: I have been using different sources both on internet and library. Research has been vital in my approach to learning. Conducting Research has been important aspect of all my assignments. Performing research on various topics has exposed me to different perspectives and has developed and clarified my own ideas and reflections about the topic. My research skills have also helped me to make evidence based arguments (Bergson-Michelson, 2012). Determined: Determination is another highly sought after attribute by recruiters of graduates. Determination is the drive to make things happen and find better ways to do things. This is a behavioral trait which has helped me in various walks of life. Active participation in sports events at college and summer job where I was responsible for Sales I earned bonuses for overachieving the target are some instances where I was able to identify this trait in me (Haden, 2016). Individual and group assignments and projects: Team work is a skill which will help an individual in any job he/she does/. I have demonstrated this skill in various group assignments where I have worked with my team to deliver solutions by applying the learning outcomes. I have also worked individually on various assignments and delivered quality solutions on time. Working in teams encourages brainstorming which results in more productivity and ideas. Working individually has polished my decision making skills and has invoked sense of ownership, as the responsibility of delivering quality work lies solely with me (Doyle, 2017). Making and justifying decisions: Decision Making is the process of choosing the best alternative to achieve desired result (Lunenburg, 2010). Decision Making in college has improved my learning by helping me in choosing the right streams and subjects to pursue for career betterment. Potential employers look at decision making as key to independent and successful behavior. Decision Making has also helped me in taking up leadership roles in group activities. Goal Setting Goal setting is the most important aspect of Personal development plan. It is the process of deciding what is to be accomplished, how and what time frame. To ensure that the goals are accomplished they should have 5 characteristics:- Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time bound. Goals with all these characteristics are called SMART goals (Ward, 2017). To achieve the long term goal of becoming a Professional I have developed an action plan by breaking it down into intermediate, short and long term goals. Following is the detailed action plan to achieve my career goal: Intermediate Goals: Intermediate goals are those goals which may take 6 months or more to accomplish. My intermediate goal is to gain a variety of skills and knowledge at college which will help me professionally later on. Following are a few activities I will pursue in order to achieve my intermediate goal: Take additional classes other than the core subject: I plan to take some extra classes on subjects other than my core subjects. This will help me in identifying my weaknesses. Join a club: I plan to join a club or activity which will give me an opportunity to be with people who have new and different ideas and opinions. This will help me in broadening my horizon and help me think out of the box. Meeting the faculties and career advisor at college: I will try to meet the professors on regular basis. This will help me grow my knowledge beyond classrooms. Staying in touch with the career advisor can give me an opportunity to access the resources which can help me in transition from student to a working professional. Working towards improving grades: I will also concentrate on improving my grades with each assessment. For this I will read my texts, submit my assignments on time and attend all the classes regularly (Sahlfeld, 2011). Short Term Goals: Short term goals take little longer than intermediate goals to get accomplished. Most short term goals are set 1 year or more in the future (Connick, 2017). My short term goal is to find summer internship where I can firsthand experience of working culture. Detailed below is the course of action I plan to take in order to find a suitable Internship: Gaining essential back ground knowledge: before starting an Internship it will be beneficial to obtain the necessary background knowledge about what will be expected out of me as an intern and how will I do it. For this I plan to read books and trade magazines about the field. Finding a Mentor: It will very helpful if can find a mentor on campus who can help me find an organization where I can pursue my internship and can provide guidance and support before, during and after the completion of internship. Mentors are important if a student wants to make the most out of his/her internship. Enroll with Placement cell: Another important activity is enrolling with placement cell at college. Many organizations looking for interns directly contact the placement cells at the college. For freshers, with no prior experience finding an internship via placement cell is the easiest way. Preparing resume and cover letter: For a fresher it is important to develop a strong resume where skills and achievements are nicely highlighted, because in absence of experience these details will help me in giving recruiters an idea about my professional capabilities. Long Term Goal: Long term goal is something which is planned to be achieved in future. Long term goals require lot of time and planning. My long term goal is to find a suitable job after completion of this course. My aim is to find a job which is professionally fulfilling and I can put the knowledge and skills acquired during the course to use. To achieve the long term goal I will do following things: Create a list of target companies: Create a list of 10-12 target companies and direct the effort to research and apply at these companies instead of randomly applying to each and every job which Im eligible for. This will save time and energy invested in researching the companies while applying for job. Networking: Using the contacts developed during internship or with the help career cell at college try to find links at these target companies. This exercise will help in setting up interviews and these links can also act as references. Update the resume: Update the resume and cover letter to add the experience at internship. An updated resume makes positive impression on the recruiter and helps in presenting all the skills and experiences in one place. Now the resume should also have an updated career objective which must be different from what it was at the time of internship. What do I need to do in order to get there? As I assess my current set of skills I find that I need to build on following skill sets in order to achieve my career goals. Communication Skills: Communication skills top the list of fundamental skills required to succeed in the workplace. Today, in the age of social media communication has become more casual. There is need to realize the importance of proper communication at the workplace if one seeks to be successful. Successful leaders like Steve Jobs and Jeff Bezos all have one thing in common and that is effective communication skills. In order to bridge this skill gap following steps need to be taken: Complementing the verbal communication with the nonverbal: Nonverbal communication contributes 55% to how the message is perceived so it is important to learn the basics of nonverbal communication. Be open to feedbacks: To become a better communicator be open to feedback from your seniors and subordinates (Patel, 2017). IT skills Today employers look for IT skills on every resume, whether the job is IT related or not. Since almost all the office activities are now automated knowledge of computers is a must. In order to be selected for preferred job it is important that the resume has some of the important IT skills like web skills (emailing and social media), word processing skills, spreadsheet and databases and IT troubleshooting (Florentine, 2017). Professional skills Professional skills help employees to collaborate better with others this improves productivity at the workplace. Hiring managers are prioritizing professional skills while recruiting because people with softy skills are easier to work with. Of the most sought after skills I will need to develop 2 skills: Time Management and flexibility, for which I propose to do following: Prioritizing: I will start preparing daily work lists with time bound and prioritized activities. Focus: Focus on one activity at a time Multi-Tasking can cause distraction (Jordan, 2016). Awareness of opportunities Opportunity identification competence is not only limited to be possessed by entrepreneurs. This skill is highly desired in employees to excel. This skill can be imbibed by staying updated about the innovations happening in my functional area and by proactively learning new skills. This will help me in staying ahead of peers and provide career progression (Anthony, 2012). Preparation of transition A survey Payscale.com suggested that less than 10% students believe that they are prepared to join the work force. Today academic skills alone are not sufficient High Impact practices which relate to real world problems to academic lessons are need of the hour. Soft skills like creativity, collaboration and critical thinking prepare a college graduate for the struggles of corporate atmosphere (Glazer, 2016). Conclusion Developing a Personal development plan is the starting point of taking a systematic approach towards developing skills. Now that the personal development plan is ready the next logical step will be to put it to execution. A successful execution will require timely evaluation of the progress made towards achieving the set goals. Feedback plays an important role in monitoring the progress of PDP. In order to make most out of a PDP it is important to whole heartedly embrace your potential and put continuous efforts to convert the goals to reality. References Anthony, S. (2012).
