MeisterTip Adding Links in MindMeister Welcome fellow MindMeisters (and non-meisters)! This is our inaugural post in a coming series of tips and tricks that highlight some of the little known functions in  MindMeister. Well start with something simple but important adding links. Stay tuned for future MeisterTips! Whether you’re a CEO conducting a SWOT analysis of your competition and want to link to their website, a student or professor using internal links to further explain a topic, or an individual user including links to point viewers to additional mind maps youve created; using links is a great way to enrich your mind map and include data. There are two unique ways to add links to your mind map: either manually, or using our WunderLink feature to automatically insert  the most relevant topic link from Google. 1. Manually Entering Links The option to add links can be found under the Extras panel in the sidebar. The default linking option is set to URL. You can either manually type the web address into this field or paste the address from a separate browser window. Clicking anywhere else on your mind map will associate this link to your node. Chances are, you’ve already found the best link possible for your idea, but why not let the power of the internet double check for you? By clicking on Advanced, you’ll be presented with a dialog box that will automatically search for the most relevant links to your topic. If you find a link that better suits your topic, simply click on it, and then click OK. This will automatically insert the link to your selected node. 1.1 Internal Linking Similar to adding URL links, you can also link to topics within your current mind map  or any other of your MindMeister mind maps. Simply switch to the Topics tab in the Advanced dialog and select the map and topic you want to link to. 1.2 Email Links Last but not least, you can also add email links to any selected  . To do this, just switch to the Email Address tab and  enter the address. You can also enter multiple addresses separated by commas. 2. Using WunderLink The second method of adding links to your topics  is by letting the power of the internet do the heavy lifting for you. Our WunderLink feature can be accessed by clicking on the magic wand icon  in the link widget. Every time you click on the wand, WunderLink will automatically suggest a new link for your topic. Just keep clicking until youve found the perfect one for your needs. By adding links to your mind map nodes you can exponentially add value and content, and thereby comprehension to your end user or collaborative team. How Cruelty has an Impact on the Characters of The God of Small Things - Literature Essay Samples

Throughout the many relationships in Arundhati Roy’s novel The God of Small Things, love, both familial and romantic, is presented as a beautiful, cruel, unjust, and empowering aspect of life. The story, told through the eyes of the young twins, Rahel and Estha, takes place in post-colonial India where strife among class, religion, race and political ideologies runs rampant. As a result of this conflict, society has laid down the so-called â€Å"Love Laws† that are tested in the novel. In a non-chronological manner, the twins bear witness to severe pain when their lives are turned upside down time and time again due to clashing boundaries and the power of love. Cruelty in The God of Small Things, as a result of cultural love restrictions, reveals the vulnerability of young children, shaping them to be the indirect and emotional victims of society. The â€Å"Love Laws†, which are so prominent in the novel, serve as consequential catalysts for the fate of relationships. Breaking them inflicts pain and suffering, while following them creates tension and constriction for the characters involved. For example, Pappachi and Mammachi’s relationship strictly follows the Love Laws since they are a result of a traditional marriage that wasn’t necessarily grounded on a basis of love. They live a life of enforced gender roles, and Pappachi is not scared to show his utmost authority over Mammachi. He ends up frequently beating her, and, by the end of his life, they have pretty much lost all feelings for each other. Mammachi cries at his funeral because she is use to his presence, not because she loves him which shows that Mammachi values familiarity and consistency, two main components of the â€Å"Love Laws†. Contrary to Mammachi, Ammu ignores the â€Å"Love Laws† to pursue her feelings towards Velutha. Ammu, who comes from a successful and powerful family, crosses the line when she starts an affair with Velutha, an â€Å"untouchable† meaning he’s a member of a very low caste. Their relationship defies society since they come from very different backgrounds and situations. Based on the â€Å"Love Laws†, it isn’t the norm to marry outside of one’s caste, and it is even considered disrespectful for both sides. The relationship is discovered after Velutha’s father betrays him resulting in Velutha’s arrest and death. Ammu is left in shambles and never fully recovers from her heartbreak. In both relationships, one that follows the â€Å"Love Laws† and one that contradicts them, there are victims that are hurt by the cruelty of society and the expectations of love. Ultimately, the â€Å"Love Laws† are extreme measures that te nd to prohibit happiness whether they are followed or not which demonstrates that society should not judge people’s romantic actions, as they lead to constricting agony. As a result of the painful relationships that the adults in the novel partake in, Estha and Rahel are severely affected, and ultimately become the real victims of the cruelty inflicted on their family. Even though the situation with Velutha and Ammu ends in a tragic way for both of them, Estha and Rahel experience the most emotional pain and guilt from the horrible events that unfolded. Velutha might have been killed in a brutal and unjust way, but his death was more of a sacrifice. He died a martyr for the sake of the family and the ones he loved. By committing himself to a relationship with Ammu, he took a huge risk that made him choose love over safety making him one of the most courageous characters of the novel. However, his fate hurt the children significantly since they lost the only trustworthy adult role model they had. He represented both a father figure and a mother figure in their lives making his loss horribly devastating to the children. Ammu, who had already started to spiral downward, mentally clasps after the death of Velutha. She attempts to find a job while being unable to care for the twins, and eventually dies a lonely premature death. She fails to reconnect with her kids, and they have a hard time forgiving her for their neglect while growing up. What is more, the children were guilted into insuring his conviction by Baby Kochamma, leaving them with a feeling of resentment and loss for the rest of their lives. The aloofness of the adults such as Baby Kochamma and Ammu is what makes the situation even more cruel since Ammu doesn’t seem to ever consider the feelings of her children while risking her life for love, and Baby Kochamma doesn’t realize that they have a mind of their own for which they can figure out the truth of what they got themselves into by lying to the law enforcement. As far as the story suggests, the children never fully recover from the devastation they witnessed at the age of nine, demonstrating their immense vulnerability at a young age. Ammu, who never truly recovers from heartbreak, becomes completely incapable of taking care of the twins. Estha is â€Å"Returned† to his alcoholic dad and, from that day on, he becomes a mute presumably due to the fact that he has been taken away from everyone he loves, in addition to feeling guilt over Velutha’s conviction. Rahel is left with her extended family where she is sent to various boarding schools. She gets kicked out of many of them showing her mental instability and lack of adult guidance. She later marries an American man named Larry and lives with him in Boston. They eventually divorce partly since Rahel seems preoccupied every time they make love. It is understood that Rahel is permanently scarred from the trauma of her childhood surrounding the idea of love. Once reunited, Rahel and Estha share a lot of intimate time together back in India, and they eventually goes as far as to sleeping together. This extreme measure is not out of love or lust, but out of pain. It represents a culmination of all the hardships that the twins have endured both together and separate throughout the years. The act is also a drastic action that goes against the â€Å"Love Laws†. It demonstrates that everything has come full circle. Sometimes, the cruelty that love has on characters can stay with them for years and come back to bite them in extreme measures such as incestuous sex. All in all, the lives of Rahel and Estha are severely changed due to them losing their innocence at such a age, making them victims of cruelty. Estha and Rahel, being young children, are grievously affected by tragic relationships in the novel The God of Small Things. Although they do not suffer physical hardship, the cruelty that is present when young stays with them into their adult lives which shows the vulnerability of children and the power of that love can have.

For many teenagers, their 18th birthday is an exciting time in their lives. They are finally becoming a legal adult, and are free from the rules and restrictions created under their parents. But not all teens feel the same joy about this coming of age. For the hundreds of thousands of children living in foster care in the United States, this new found freedom brings anxiety and fear. Where will they live after turning 18? How will they get the medications they may need? How will they find a job with little to no experience? How will they put themselves through school? No two children in foster care have the same background. The youths can vary by the age when placed into care, the number of times they were put into care, the quality of the home and family they lived with, and the youths own emotional outlooks (Zlotnick 539). They can develop abandonment issues due to being separated from their biological parents, and stunted emotional growth due to the trauma that foster care puts on a young child. Children need to be raised in a stable and safe environment, and while plenty of foster care parents are loving and nurturing to the child, they may still be affected by being raised by multiple families in a negative way. Every year, over 1 million children experience maltreatment, and about half of these children enter foster care (Greeson et al. 92). Those who enter foster care have usually encountered multiple traumatic events, from either their parents or another caregiver in their lives. There are different types of trauma child welfare programs focus on. They typically focus on behavioral and emotional problems and ways to correct the child (Greeson et al. 94). However, it is not as simple as the welfare programs want it to be. One first must look at the trauma history of the child, or the â€Å"Trauma History Profile†, also known as THP (Greeson et al. 97). Checking out me history and island man comparison. â€Å"Checking out me history† is all about the writer wanting to learn about his past. Instead, he is being taught all about the history of white people. He keeps reciting facts that he has learnt. Some of the facts most English children would have learnt whilst they are in school, and some of the facts he has been taught outside of school, probably by his parents. The poem seems like it is a rant to the schooling system and the politics of the country. This may be why there is no punctuation in this poem. It is a way to rebel against the teachers. At school the teachers are always telling you to check your spelling and punctuation, and he is disagreeing with the way and things he is†¦show more content†¦This, along with a large amount of enjambment makes the poem flow easily. It seems like it is a few longs lines, rather than five stanzas! When you read the poem aloud the sound makes you think of waves in the sea, going back and forth. In the first stanza, there is a lot of sibilance – repeating of the sound â€Å"s†. This sounds a lot like the waves. In the first stanza, the fourth line is slightly different to the other lines. It tells you he is not in real life, because it is in his head, which suggests he is dreaming. In the second and third lines, there is enjambment, but this is where it stops. It confuses the reader, because without the fourth line, he is actually on his island, but when you read the fourth line you realise he is dreaming. The confusion reminds me of waking up in the morning, when you think you are still dreaming but then you realise you are not dreaming. At the end of the first stanza, the poet says â€Å"the steady breaking and wombing†. Steady breaking reminds you of the waves breaking on the beach on a nice clear morning, which implies it is a good memory. The word â€Å"wombing† is very rarely used in everyday life. It means to be doing nothing, being oblivious to the outside world. In addition, it implies protection and comfort. Before a baby is born, it lives in the mother’s womb, where the mother protects it and comforts. The womb is the baby’s home, although only for a short while. Is ambition a good thing or a bad thing? Can you succeed without ambition? Ambition is a strong desire to do or to achieve a goal or something that is important to you. In Shakespeare’s â€Å"Macbeth† the main character uses ambition to make himself king but it also pushed him to do something that he wasn’t sure was the right thing to do. A sometimes ambition can be viewed to be more negative trait than positive. Ambition is a positive trait and it pushes you to achieve your goals, without ambition nothing would ever get done. His face was so worried, I wondered if this would even work. I hardly needed the romance, but maybe he did. He closed his eyes as he leaned toward me, an automatic thing. His lips pressed lightly against mine once, and then he pulled back to look at me with the same worried expression. Nothing. â€Å"No, Ian. Really kiss me. Like†¦ like you’re trying to get slapped. Do you understand?† â€Å"No. What’s wrong? Tell me first.† I put my arms around his neck. It felt strange; I wasn’t at all sure how to do this right. I pushed up on my toes and pulled his head down at the same time until I could reach his lips with mine. This wouldn’t have worked with another species. Another mind wouldn’t have been so easily overwhelmed by its body. Other species had their priorities in better order. But Ian was human, and his body responded. I shoved my mouth against his, gripping his neck tighter with my arms when his first reaction was to hold me away. Remembering how his mouth had moved with mine before, I tried to mimic that movement now. His lips opened with mine, and I felt an odd thrill of triumph at my success. I caught his lower lip between my teeth and heard a low, wild sound break from his throat in surprise. And then I didn’t have to try anymore. One of Ian’s hands trapped my face, while the other clamped around the small of my back, holding me so close that it was hard to pull a breath into my constricted chest. I was gasping, but so was he. His breath mingled with mine. I felt the stone wall touch my back, press against it. He used it to bind me even closer. There was no part of me that wasn’t fused to part of him. It was just the two of us, so close that we hardly counted as two. Just us. No one else. Alone. Ian felt it when I gave up. He must have been waiting for this-not as entirely ruled by his body as I’d imagined. He eased back as soon as my arms went limp, but kept his face next to mine, the tip of his nose touching the tip of mine. I dropped my arms, and he took a deep breath. Slowly, he loosened both his hands and then placed them lightly on my shoulders. â€Å"Explain,† he said. â€Å"She’s not here,† I whispered, still breathing in gasps. â€Å"I can’t find her. Not even now.† â€Å"Melanie?† â€Å"I can’t hear her! Ian, how can I go back in to Jamie? He’ll know that I’m lying! How can I tell him that I’ve lost his sister now? Ian, he’s sick! I can’t tell him that! I’ll upset him, make it harder for him to get well. I -â€Å" Ian’s fingers pressed against my lips. â€Å"Shh, shh. Okay. Let’s think about this. When was the last time you heard her?† â€Å"Oh, Ian! It was right after I saw†¦ in the hospital. And she tried to defend them†¦ and I screamed at her†¦ and I-I made her go away! And I haven’t heard her since. I can’t find her!† â€Å"Shh,† he said again. â€Å"Calmly. Okay. Now, what do you really want? I know you don’t want to upset Jamie, but he’s going to be fine regardless. So, consider-would it be better, just for you, if -â€Å" â€Å"No! I can’t erase Melanie! I can’t. That would be wrong! That would make me a monster, too!† â€Å"Okay, okay! Okay. Shh. So we have to find her?† I nodded urgently. He took another deep breath. â€Å"Then you need to†¦ really be overwhelmed, don’t you?† â€Å"I don’t know what you mean.† I was afraid I did, though. Kissing Ian was one thing-even a pleasant thing, maybe, if I wasn’t so racked with worry-but anything more†¦ elaborate†¦ Could I? Mel would be furious if I used her body that way. Was that what I had to do to find her? But what about Ian? It was so grossly unfair to him. â€Å"I’ll be right back,† Ian promised. â€Å"Stay here.† He pressed me against the wall for emphasis and then ducked back out into the hallway. It was hard to obey. I wanted to follow him, to see what he was doing and where he was going. We had to talk about this; I had to think it through. But I had no time. Jamie was waiting for me, with questions that I couldn’t answer with lies. No, he wasn’t waiting for me; he was waiting for Melanie. How could I have done this? What if she was really gone? Mel, Mel, Mel, come back! Melanie, Jamie needs you. Not me-he needs you. He’s sick, Mel. Mel, can you hear that? Jamie is sick! I was talking to myself. No one heard. My hands were trembling with fear and stress. I wouldn’t be able to wait here much longer. I felt like the anxiety was going to make me swell until I popped. Finally, I heard footsteps. And voices. Ian wasn’t alone. Confusion swept through me. â€Å"Just think of it as†¦ an experiment,† Ian was saying. â€Å"Are you crazy?† Jared answered. â€Å"Is this some sick joke?† My stomach dropped through the floor. Overwhelmed. That’s what he’d meant. Blood burned in my face, hot as Jamie’s fever. What was Ian doing to me? I wanted to run, to hide somewhere better than my last hiding place, somewhere I could never, ever be found, no matter how many flashlights they used. But my legs were shaking, and I couldn’t move. His cheek pressed against mine, the skin burning where we were connected, and he whispered in my ear. â€Å"Melanie. I know you’re there. Come back to me.† His cheek slowly slid back, and his chin tilted to the side so that his mouth covered mine. He tried to kiss me softly. I could tell that he tried. But his intentions went up in smoke, just like before. There was fire everywhere, because he was everywhere. His hands traced my skin, burning it. His lips tasted every inch of my face. The rock wall slammed into my back, but there was no pain. I couldn’t feel anything besides the burning. My hands knotted in his hair, pulling him to me as if there were any possible way for us to be closer. My legs wrapped around his waist, the wall giving me the leverage I needed. His tongue twisted with mine, and there was no part of my mind that was not invaded by the insane desire that possessed me. He pulled his mouth free and pressed his lips to my ear again. â€Å"Melanie Stryder!† It was so loud in my ear, a growl that was almost a shout. â€Å"You will not leave me. Don’t you love me? Prove it! Prove it! Damn it, Mel! Get back here!† His lips attacked mine again. Ahhh, she groaned weakly in my head. I couldn’t think to greet her. I was on fire. The fire burned its way to her, back to the tiny corner where she drooped, nearly lifeless. My hands fisted around the fabric of Jared’s T-shirt, yanking it up. This was their idea; I didn’t tell them what to do. His hands burned on the skin of my back. Jared? she whispered. She tried to orient herself, but the mind we shared was so disoriented. I felt the muscles of his stomach under my palms, my hands crushed between us. What? Where†¦ Melanie struggled. I broke away from his mouth to breathe, and his lips scorched their way down my throat. I buried my face in his hair, inhaling the scent. Jared! Jared! NO! I let her flow through my arms, knowing this was what I wanted, though I could barely pay attention now. The hands on his stomach turned hard, angry. The fingers clawed at his skin and then shoved him as hard as they could. â€Å"NO!† she shouted through my lips. Jared caught her hands, then caught me against the wall before I could fall. I sagged, my body confused by the conflicting directions it was receiving. â€Å"Mel? Mel!† â€Å"What are you doing?† He groaned in relief. â€Å"I knew you could do it! Ah, Mel!† He kissed her again, kissed the lips that she now controlled, and we could both taste the tears that ran down his face. She bit him.
